Redesigning LMS mobile & desktop experience for 4L users
TIMELINE
Mar 2019 - Early 2022
PLATFORM
iOS, Android & Desktop
MY ROLE
Product Designer
Introduction
The Learning Management System (LMS) is a feature on myAakash app provides educational resources like videos, ebooks, and practice papers, and fosters adaptive learning with tailored paths and competitive tests to enhance students' engagement and progress.
My Role
As the sole lead on the myAakash app and web, I guided its research and design elements, working closely with product managers and tech team to align the development process.
Problem
Students experience inefficiency and a lack of user-centric features due to two different platforms, myAakash and iTutor. Here are the key problems with the core experience.

PROBLEM #1
Inefficient Navigation
Students must switch between myAakash and iTutor, leading to a time-consuming experience.
EXAMPLE
If students want to watch videos and take test they need to use itutor app and if want to see test performance and time table they need to use myAakash app.

PROBLEM #2
Lack Of User-Centric Approach
Unclear user experience leads to frustration in users, increasing the drop-off rate.
EXAMPLE
Selected course is not highlighted. Users cannot see which course they have currently opted for.

PROBLEM #3
Absence of Essential Feature
Functionalities like tracking progress, lecture details, user questions, and specific tips and practice questions are missing.
EXAMPLE
The video screen lacks current video playing status and content progress. User cannot identify which videos have been watched or not.

PROBLEM #4
No Adaptive Learning
The platforms lack customization to individual student needs, resulting in a generic learning path.
EXAMPLE
The current platform did no suggest recommended content based on student performance in tests.
Defining the Problem
How might we redesign a better experience for students to improve there academic score and enhance learning?
Goals
BUSINESS GOALS
All-in-One Platform
To bring all features to one platform, reducing the need for multiple login information.
Saving Printing Cost
Reducing the need for printed materials by consolidating features on one platform.
USER GOALS
Credible Guidance
To ensure a network of subject matter experts and teachers who provide thoughtful guidance and verify every question and answer for clarity, accuracy, and kindness.
Personalized Experience
To show material about the subjects that matter most to students. Also, to track progress through a dashboard and profile page so students can set goals and stay on track.
Impact
As this is a huge project, we released the new designs in phases. For confidentiality reasons, I have omitted the actual values for these metrics.

Outside of the classroom, you're left on your own to figure it all out. And while there are endless places to turn to online, you can end up getting even more lost while searching for an answer, rather than learning.

Users
Before we started designing, we deep dive into existing behaviour of our users to understand them better. We also conducted a series of user interviews
The product is only accessed by Regular Classroom Courses (RCC) and Hybrid students who are enrolled at aakash Institute.

Offline Students
Students who go to both school and institute. Students who only go to the institute.
JOBS-TO-BE-DONE
When I need to revise for my test, my notes should be easily accessible, and I should get all my doubts solved when needed.

Hybrid Students
Enrolled in both offline and online courses at Aakash Institute.
JOBS-TO-BE-DONE
When I am not in class, I can attend my lecture online and ask doubts.
Competitor Analysis
The purpose of research was to benchmark, understand, and analysing current competitors' platforms.

Usability Testing Feedback
To validate our designs and test prototypes, we conducted usability testing with 12 students using a Figma prototype. We visited the Aakash Institute in Gurgaon.
We received insightful feedback from the students, which helped us revisit and enhance the designs based on their insights.

Design Sprints
Discussions among Product Managers, Business, and Design teams focused on problems in the existing iTutor module and how to make learning more effective and engage more students on the app.
Design: Need to built a design system for the platform and conduct user research by visiting institutes.

Final Designs
Here's a detailed walkthrough of the redesigned student app.
Your Home Is Personalised for You
The content you see is now more relevant. We talked to the students about most relevant information while doing user interview. Being the all the features from both he app on one single platform, where student can see all the study material, give tests and ask doubts.

Watch Video. Ask Doubts. View Progress
To give visibility to system status, we introduced progress tracking for every video, allowing students to know their overall chapter progress.
During the research process, we gained insights that students often have many doubts while studying. Based on this insight, we introduced the doubt feature in the video screen as well.

Ask Your Doubt
With the help of the data and engineering teams, we introduced a chatbot. If students have any doubts, they can use the “Ask a Doubt” chat feature, which resolves doubts through two methods: auto-suggestion and resolution by faculty on their portal.
This feature help in saving 10,000+* faculty hours.

What We learned
Products Don’t Exist in a Vacuum
Conducting thorough user research before and during the design process was crucial in creating a user-centric platform. Usability testing and continuous feedback from students allowed us to understand their behaviors, needs, and pain points.
This approach ensured that the final product was both functional and well-received by the users, addressing specific needs and improving the overall learning experience.
Leveraging Data for Decision-Making
Data played a pivotal role in shaping the design and functionality of our platform. By analyzing user behavior and feedback, we could make informed decisions about which features to implement and how to prioritize them. The integration of data-driven insights ensured that our enhancements were impactful and met the actual needs of our users.
